The original Shetland dog likely descended from preexisting native dogs, which were recorded living on the island as far back as the late 1400s, as well as spitz-type dogs brought to the island by Norse settlers in the 8th century to watch over their livestock. However, some argue that the original Shelties were not herding dogs, but companion dogs.

The Whippet's origin is somewhat of a mystery. Many historians believe the breed has an ancestry that spans back to the days of the ancient pharaohs, but others have traced the Whippet's heritage to the early Greeks, pointing to depictions of small, greyhound-like dogs featured in the era's art as evidence.
