The original Shetland dog likely descended from preexisting native dogs, which were recorded living on the island as far back as the late 1400s, as well as spitz-type dogs brought to the island by Norse settlers in the 8th century to watch over their livestock. However, some argue that the original Shelties were not herding dogs, but companion dogs.

Leonhard Seppala created this breed to be the ultimate sled dogs. In 1925 diphtheria was threatening the children of Nome, Alaska and treatment was hundreds of miles away. Seppala and other mushers teamed up to deliver the serum to Nome in the middle of winter. The dogs that ran the 658 miles from Nenana to Nome were revered.
