Breed Management How To Register

How do I add a dog to my account?

You can add a dog to your account by submitting a CKC Puppy Application using the "Puppy Registration Form" or by registering a dog from another CKC-recognized registry through the "Dog Registration Form." You must be logged into your account to use these forms.

To review the documents needed for dog registration if the dog is over a year old, does not have a CKC Puppy Application, or comes from another registry, click here.

The Puppy Application Form does not expire. If you have an adult dog that is not yet registered and received a CKC Puppy Application from a breeder, you can still submit their registration through this form without incurring any penalties or fees for late submission.

Where can I find my dogs and/or litters?

You can find any dogs and litters associated with your account in the left horizontal menu in "MyCKC," and after clicking the "My Dogs" and "Litters" tabs.

How do I transfer ownership of a CKC-registered dog?

To transfer ownership of a dog and change the owner listed on its official registration records, complete the Transfer of Ownership Form located on the back of the dog’s original CKC registration certificate and return the certificate to us, along with payment for the service(s) and items(s) selected. Transfers of ownership cannot be initiated by phone. The original certificate (or other approved documents) must be submitted to our office for processing.

If the previous owner did not provide you with the dog’s original certificate of registration or the certificate has been lost, you may download and submit a CKC Supplemental Transfer Form to request the transfer of ownership.

The previous owner must sign the Transfer of Ownership Form or Supplemental Transfer Form, agreeing to the change of ownership. If you are unable to obtain the previous owner’s signature, please download, complete, and submit a CKC Certification of Ownership Form with the transfer form.

How do I register a litter with multiple sires?

  • The breeder must complete one Litter Application for each sire, obtaining the sire owner’s information, signature, and proof of registration attached to the respective applications.
  • The breeder must submit the parentage DNA results for the dam, the sires, and each puppy in the litter. Parentage DNA must show each individual puppy linked to the correct sire and dam within the litter.
  • Applications and all DNA proof of parentage must be emailed, mailed, or faxed for the request.

Documentation Documentation

What is a pedigree?

A pedigree is the (official) record of a purebred dog’s ancestry (parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, etc.). They usually contain at least 3 generations. Sometimes, more information is available. Please contact our office at 1.800.952.3376 with your dog’s CKC Number to order one.

Why is my dog's pedigree incomplete?

Occasionally, a full CKC pedigree is not available. This may be the case when either parent is dual-registered from another organization, and the owner did not supply the pedigree, or if the dog, parent, or grandparent was a foundation animal registered through our PAW Program. Dogs that are the first of their line to be registered with CKC through PAW are known as foundation animals and will not have a full pedigree available. Although missing pedigree information can be disappointing, it’s essential to recognize the critical genetic contribution these foundation animals make and their role in assisting CKC in our mission of maintaining a large and diverse genetic population for every breed. For this reason, CKC cannot offer full pedigrees for every dog of every breed.

How do I update my dog's pedigree?

If your dog's pedigree is incomplete, we can add family history information provided directly to us by email, mail, or fax. In some instances, you may obtain missing pedigree information from a previous owner or contact the breeder to see if they have any additional information. If so, we will happily update our records and issue a pedigree.

We do not have access to the databases for other registries, and cannot research a pedigree. If you have a dog that was dual registered with us, you may submit the official pedigree at any time to document the family history.

Puppy Registration Application and Puppy Application Corrections

General Puppy Registration Application Information

  • Puppy Registration Applications may be ordered up to one year from the litter’s date of birth. After that, Puppy Registration Applications cannot be obtained, and individual Canine Registration Applications must be supplied. Applicants must adhere to current CKC rules, guidelines, policies, and procedures for submission.

  • Upon successful registration, a confirmation summary of the litter details will be provided via email or mailed if no email address is provided. The litter summary letter does NOT provide individual registration information. Each application will be pre-printed with a unique Litter ID number for individual owner registration purposes. The printed application MUST be provided to new owners for them to complete their registration.

  • Puppy Registration Applications will be reissued free of charge to the breeder up to thirty (30) days from their issue date if they are not received. The breeder must verify their address. CKC cannot send the replacement applications directly to the new puppy owner.

  • Puppy Registration Applications will be corrected upon notification by the member to CKC. Reissue fees may apply.

  • The breeder/owner of the litter is responsible for notifying new owners who have already taken possession of their puppy and registration application about the changes needed. New puppy owners should not use invalid puppy applications. The new puppy owner should wait to register their puppy until the updated application from the breeder/litter owner with the correct information is received, and the incorrect documents (applications, certificates, pedigrees, etc.) should be returned to CKC or destroyed. Puppy Registration Applications in the new owner's possession are not to be returned and are considered VOID.

  • If the new owner already registered the puppy before the correction, the breeder/litter owners are responsible for any reissue fees for services rendered to the new puppy owner prior to any correction, regardless of the registration date.

  • Documents are released only to the breeder/litter owner on record.

  • After thirty (30) days from the issue date, fees are assessed according to the current Member Service Fee Schedule.

  • Breeders and litter owners must review all Puppy Registration Applications immediately upon receipt and report any error or omission to CKC immediately to avoid fees.

Corrections

The breeder must pay applicable reissue fees according to the Member Service Fee Schedule.

    • The breeder may report this change by phone and update the Puppy Registration Applications.

    • CKC does not require the breeder to reissue the Puppy Registration Applications, but they may do so if they choose.

  • Registrations Filed:
    • The breeder must submit this change in writing, including the correct birthdate for the litter.

    • The breeder must notify buyers of the invalid application they possess, if necessary.

    • The breeder must pay applicable reissue fees for registered puppies, including certificates, pedigrees, etc.

Incorrect Number of Puppies

  • The breeder must submit this change in writing within 30 DAYS of the original registration date.

  • Failure to correct this error type within the timeframe allowed will result in the inability to register any puppies unaccounted for.

Incorrect Sire or Dam Listed

  • The breeder must submit this change in writing, including the proper parent(s) name(s) and CKC registration number(s).

  • Any Puppy Registration Applications in the breeder’s possession must be returned by mail to CKC.

  • The breeder must notify puppy buyers of the invalid status of the application in their possession.

  • The breeder must pay applicable reissue fees for puppies already registered AND updated Puppy Registration Applications not yet submitted for registration.

  • The incorrect documents (applications, certificates, pedigrees, etc.) should be returned to CKC or destroyed upon receiving new/updated paperwork.

I lost my Puppy Registration Application(s). Can I order another one?

We can reissue Puppy Registration Applications if they are lost or not received, free of charge, within 30 days of the registration date. After that time, according to our Member Service Fee Schedule, there is a minimum $5.00 reissue fee. You may make your request by phone and pay with a debit or credit card or submit a written request with a check or money order. We send the application to the breeder/seller responsible for signing it and forwarding it to the puppy buyer.

I lost my dog's certificate. Can I get another copy?
