Limited Registration

Limited Registration

What is Limited Registration?

A “limited registration” status allows the new owner to transfer the dog or puppy to their name, but restricts their use as a dam or sire of a CKC-registered litter. CKC will print this classification on all official documentation. The owner and canine retain all other rights and privileges afforded to CKC members.

Why limit registration?

A breeder may limit a dog's registration (exercise selective breeding) for many reasons:

Dogs Not Recommended for Breeding

Breeders may exclude dogs or puppies from their breeding programs due to deviation from the standard, known as “faults.”

  • Minor faults, including minor cosmetic deviations like hair texture
  • Major faults, including structural defects, temperament, and ability or utility.
  • Congenital abnormalities or malformations are present at birth, resulting from genetic factors, environmental issues, or unknown causes.
  • Genetic health conditions, including things like hip dysplasia, brachycephalic syndrome, heart disease, epilepsy, and degenerative myelopathy.

How do I limit the registration of the puppies I sell?

Members may limit the registration of puppies they produce if they:

  • Are an active member of the Preferred Breeder Program.
  • Pay the registration fee and register the puppy to themselves (the breeder) as 'limited' before it goes to the new owner.

How do I remove the limited registration from a puppy I sold?

  • Only the Breeder can request that CKC remove a canine's limited status. They must submit the request in writing, and correspondence must contain the owner's name and CKC number.

Limited Registration FAQ's

Does CKC recognize limited registration from other kennel clubs?

Our goal has always been to support healthy, diverse gene pools within breeds rather than removing canines from the gene pool for questionable reasons, such as conformity to show standards or to eliminate competition from other breeders.

For this reason, CKC does not recognize limited registration or restriction on breeding rights determined by other registry organizations when a member submits a dual registration request.

Why should I register if I can't breed my dog?

Registering your dog with CKC includes a lifetime membership that provides benefits for you and your dog, such as:

  • A permanent record; proof of ownership. Submitting your official documentation transfers ownership from the breeder to you.
  • Ages & Stages: a 6-week puppy training series.
  • Custom products like dog tags, microchips, photo IDs, and pedigrees.
